Costa Calma is one of
the longer established holiday resorts on the island and has long
been a popular resort for German holidaymakers since 1977. Nowadays,
it has become more cosmopolitan and the mix of tourists and residents
come from all over Northern Europe.
Water sports are particularly prevelant in this part of the island
and indeed the beach at Sotavento will play host to the PWA Freestyle Grand Slam Windsurfing Championships, attracting
some of the world's top windsurfers. Also the PKRA Kiteboarding
Grand Prix will be held on Sotovento beach.
Clearly, Fuerteventura's famous trade winds play a major part in
these extreme sports and attract a great number of athletes from
around the world.
